Prime Video orders Indian version of All3Media format The Traitors from BBCS

The Traitors US, hosted by Alan Cumming, won an Emmy

Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service has ordered an Indian version of the popular Dutch psychological reality format The Traitors.

The Hindi-language adaptation is being produced by BBC Studios India Productions, with Indian filmmaker and TV personality Karan Johar tapped to host. Production is already underway.

Adaptations of the format, which was created by All3Media’s IDTV and debuted on Dutch network RTL, have now been commissioned in more than 25 markets, including the UK and US where the local versions are set for their third and fourth seasons on the BBC and Peacock respectively.

The format sees 20 contestants compete in a game of truth and deception with a group of ‘faithfuls’ tasked with uncovering the ‘traitors’ within the group. All3Media International distributes the format and sealed the Indian deal with Prime Video.

The green light for the Indian version comes less than two days after The Traitors US, which is hosted by Alan Cumming, won the Emmy for outstanding reality competition programme. The recognition marked the first time Peacock has won a Primetime Emmy for an original series.

Marc Pos and IDTV creative director Jasper Hoogendoorn created and developed the original Dutch format in cooperation with RTL Creative Unit.

“Unscripted content continues to be a key focus for us at Prime Video, as we have witnessed an exponential growth in the consumption, attention and appreciation for our unscripted original library, most recently Angry Young Men and Follow Kar Lo Yaar, amongst many others,” said Nikhil Madhok, head of originals for Prime Video India.
