The first major casting challenge on this show was finding the right actor to play the role of Martha, the woman who stalks and harasses Richard Gadd’s character Donny throughout the series. It was clear from Richard’s scripts, and early discussions with the producers and director, that we needed to find an actor of great emotional range, so that the viewer can both sympathise with, and be horrified by, Martha’s behaviour, often in quite quick succession.
